Meeting the Prophet

A couple weeks ago, I met the prophet of our church, Thomas S. Monson. It was such an incredible experience, so tender and dear to me. I knew I was going to see him and a few other apostles at the Century of Honor Celebration to commemorate 100 years of scouting in the LDS Church, but I didn't know I would actually shake his hand and talk with him.

We arrived 2 hours early to snatch up some good seats. We were the first ones to be there in our section, section 2. We were on the 6th row, rows 1-5 were being reserved. I was thrilled! After a few short moments, the security guard and ushers said they were opening up rows 2-5 and we had first dibs. We quickly changed our seats to the second row. How exciting!

About 10 minutes before the show was to start, 9 of the 12 apostles started to walk in. We were sitting in Section 2, second row, the seats are in the front and close to the door that the apostles and prophet walk through. We were so close to them. The front row was reserved for ushers and security, so really there wasn't anyone in our way of seeing anyone walking in.

All of the security guards stood up and faced the audience, that was a sure sign that the prophet would be walking in soon. And there he was!  Just watching him walk in was so moving. It was touching to see his bodyguard helping him walk down the aisle. There were thousands and thousands of people in attendance, but you could hear a penny drop to the floor because of how quiet it was. It was that reverent.

He started walking in front of the audience and was waving to people. The prophet noticed Tyler standing next to me, looked him in the eye and said "Now there's a future missionary." He was in the middle of continuing to step forward when he changed his position and walked directly towards us. The prophet then said, "watch this!" He wiggled both of his ears and all the people around us laughed. The prophet held out his hand and shook Tyler's with authority and love. They spoke for just a few more short moments about scouting, and he was on his way. He continued to wave to people and sat down.

What an amazing experience that Tyler and I shared. He will (hopefully) remember it always. I can imagine Tyler on his mission talking with the youth telling them that he met the prophet Thomas S. Monson and the prophet told him he'd be a missionary. Such a tender and simple act of kindness the prophet showed to us that evening.

At the end of the celebration, Thomas S. Monson received an award and was asked to come to the pulpit and say a few words. Again, his bodyguard gently helped him. The prophet looked frail. He looked old. He looked just like someone's cute grandpa. Then he spoke. Each word was strong and precise. He spoke with love and firmness. It was powerful to witness. He even cracked a couple of jokes. He has always been such a kidder.

After the hour long scouting program (which, by the way, was absolutely amazing!) the Apostles started walking out and we were all able to shake their hands. It was amazing. It was reassuring. I was truly humbled by their compassion and love.

As Thomas S. Monson started walking towards his exit, he continued to wave and shake everyone's hand in the 2nd row. As he walked closer to us he said, "There's my missionary", pointing to Tyler.  I told him I have 7 boys. 7 future scouts. 7 future missionaries. He looked back at me with astonishment and said something on the lines of "Wow, no girls?" I placed my hand on his shoulder and asked him, "I don't know, you tell me. Are there any girls waiting to come down to my family?" Everyone around us laughed, and he threw his arms in the air and said, "I do not know that information!" Again, we were laughing.  The prophet continued to walk down our aisle shaking hands with Tyler, my mom, Bill and our cousin Trey.

That evening will always be remembered deep in my heart. I am truly thankful for the opportunity to live so close to events that the Prophet and his Apostles will attend. It was such a memorable and wonderful experience!!!

Technology is AMAZING!!!

Technology...is Amazing!!!

We flew Will and Jackson to Santa Barbara for a week right when summer started so that they not only would have some one-on-one time with Nana and Papa, but also participate in a summer camp.
Will chose stand-up paddle boarding. One of the afternoons, while at camp, my mom was taking pictures of Will and FaceTimed me. My mom was walking on the beach, and later on the pier, capturing some great shots of Will and FaceTiming us. It was so great to be able to see Will instantly and watch him paddle board live. I was able to screen capture a couple of moments. Incredible. Simply incredible!

Stroke

On Saturday late afternoon I received a call from my moms husband, Bill, that my mom had had a stroke. What?! Such unbelieving words, I couldn't totally understand what he was telling me. My mom's left arm went totally numb. Then, the left side of her face started to droop and then she started talking gibberish. Bill rushed her to the ER. Thank goodness he acted quickly. When I received the call the ER doctor thought it may be a TIA (which is a mini stroke and a lot better that a real stroke!!) After many testes and hours later the specialists changed her diagnosis back to a stroke. She had to stay the night for additional observation and in the morning had a MRI done to find the location of the stroke. I am glad to report my mom is home, doing so much better. She is on medication and is suppose to make a full recovery. It was real scary and gave me a major stress headache for 2 days straight. I hated being so far away. I felt helpless. I am so thankful for so many wonderful family members and close friends who were there at the hospital for my mom. She too is thankful for all the love and support!

Beach!!

Let's just say it was a little overcast at the beach!! At my moms house it was bright and sunny, 80 degrees. As we drove closer and closer to the beach the sunshine faded and the temp went down. Weird! We still played and had a blast!

We found this cool heart made out of shells and rocks.
Nana even came and we went on a long walk collecting seashells. Every once in a while they would race each other down the beach running. I haven't seen my mom run in years! Brig's won every time! Can you see him in this photos??

Christmas Morning

The boys were instructed not to open anything until mom, dad, Nana, and Papa were all awake and ready to watch the craziness. Scott and I woke up at 8:30 on our own. I can't believe we didn't hear them downstairs! They opened their stockings first and then the rest of the gifts. As you can see in the above picture there are a bunch of presents under and around the tree. On the left hand side of the tree are a bunch of large presents that we and Santa didn't wrap. On the right side you can see a bunch of boxes. Those are presents my mom and Bill sent to us!

It was a very MERRY Christmas! We had a blast opening the gifts and seeing what everyone received!
Thank you Nana and Papa and thank you Santa!!
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!

Cafe Rio+ family=FUN

My mom's first night here I knew we had to go out to Cafe Rio for a delicious dinner. And it was! We were so loud most people moved that were sitting close by. We laughed and talked and laughed some more. It was so much fun and a great way to start the weekend off right!

The Sprinkler

The other afternoon were outside playing in with the sprinkler have a wonderful time and then Will had a funny idea. To place the sprinkler by the back door and call out for Nana to come see something! Of course Nana heard and say everything the boys were doing, she's so smart! While Will and the other boys are calling for Nana she runs to the back room and grabs...

...one of her slickers from Disneyland. Which worked well but the laundry room got drenched. It was still funny!!

Fun in June

It's been so beautiful here in Santa Barbara, we go outside and play as often as we can. We're not use to this nice weather in June. And on grass! Crazy! We were all playing hanging out and Nathan crawled to Nana and tried to take her glasses. Pulled her hair in the process...
As I'm taking pictures, of course Brigham wants some of him...
...and then Nathan wants to get up close and personal...

By the end of our play time the boys had enough of the camera, enough of each other, and enough of playing. Nap time!!

Phone Home!

So, the other day I'm chatting on the phone with Scott and Brigham runs in and thinks I'm talking to my mom. He starts freaking out because he wants to talk with Nana. Scott has to go and we hang up. Well, poor Brig's starts crying. He is so sad. I tried calling Nana on her cell, but she didn't answer. As I'm trying to contact her on the home line Brig's runs out of the office and comes back in a few moments later. In his shirt he has something, two things. The funny thing is he's wearing one of those onesie shirts, so he had to stick what ever toys he has down the collar of the tight onesie-shirt he's wearing. I help him take the toys out one at a time. The first is his Winnie the Pooh cell phone. The second toy is another cell generic cell phone. He opens them both up, sits on the floor in my office, and starts chatting away. He's talking gibberish for several minutes with the occasional, "Nana" into the conversation. It was so cute!

Shuck-A-Buga

For those of you lucky cats out there that know my mom, you've seen these pictures in real life before! For those of you individuals out there that do not have the pleasure of knowing my mom, here is little glimpse into her crazy world.
These shots perfectly describe my mom. She is wild, crazy and oh so much fun! She'll walk outside with her crocks to take pictures of her grandsons. I always tell my mom she's going to make me millions when I write a book with all her quirky sayings and rituals she does. She makes up words like Shuck-a-buga. She says words out of context all the time that make all of us laugh. Like, when someone is being rude to her she'll call them "ignorant". She orders a lot of food, but will only nibble on it. Save it in the fridge and then a few days later will throw it away. She orders the SAME THING at restaurants. Mexican food = beef taco a la carte with a glass of milk. Pizza place is always cheese thin crust with extra Ranch. At a Red Robin kinda place it's a side salad with extra ranch, grilled cheese with tomatoes, and a Mr. Pibbs. (Yes, with a "S"!) She is always in the mood to play games and watch movies. She owns several that are all still in their wrapper locked in a drawer in her room for safe keeping! She has 5 cats and 1 dog that she LOVES and treats like her own children, seriously! My mom is funny, silly and so wonderful. She is head over heals in love with each one of my boys. She even likes Scott! And you can't go wrong with that!

I heart Nana!

This post is brought to you by Nathan Thompson:

My Nana couldn't make it to my birth, but she was listening on the phone the entire time my mom was in the delivery room. Almost everyday of my short little life my mom puts the phone to my ear so I can hear my sweet Nana talking to me. My Nana wants me to hear her voice so I can get use to it. Silly Nana, I know your voice! You're my Nana!

It sure was fun having you come and visit me over the weekend. It was too short of a visit, but my mom told me you only like to stay a couple days at a time. I hope to see you again soon. I miss you already!

I love you Nana!!

Why do you...

When my mom flew in last week from California the boys were all very excited to see her again. I picked her up at the airport with Brig's and Gavin and we headed straight to the boys school to get them. We walked to each classroom and the boys were so excited to see their Nana there.

Will runs up to her and hugs her tight. As they walk through the hallway will turns to my mom and says, " Why did you dye your hair white on the top?" !!!!! HA!!!! HA!!! I was laughing so dang hard! My mom said she's been too busy to dye her hair BROWN but would do it when we got to SB. (Yeah, right!)

Here is what her hair looks like!
